Description

The proposed changes are needed to ensure that the Glebe Island Arterial is more compatible with planning strategies for the Pyrmont-Ultimo peninsula while maintaining the primary function of the route for major regional traffic movement towards, from and around the inner city area. The Glebe Island Arterial is one of a number of projects which together would upgrade the road network serving the inner Sydney area. The need for the Glebe Island Arterial is related to its place in that network. Its objectives as a major arterial route remain relevant. The planning undertaken for the Glebe Island Arterial during the 1980's was based on accepted perceptions of land use for the Pyrmont area during that time. This context has changed with the release of the City West Urban Strategy. The Urban Strategy and subsequent planning documents establish a different land use and transport context for Pyrmont. As a result of the changed planning context, a review of the Glebe Island Arterial was undertaken by the Department of State Development in July 1990. It concluded that a number of changes to the project were required between Pyrmont Bridge Road and Miller Street, and in relation to the proposed John Street ramp, to meet the needs of the Urban Strategy.
